“Hurry is the great enemy of the spiritual life in our day. You must ruthlessly eliminate hurry from your life… There is nothing else.” -Dallas Willard.
ABOUT
Before the invention of the light bulb in 1879, people slept an average of 11 hours a night. We are now down to 7. A 1967 U.S. Senate sub-committee predicted that by 1985, the average American will work only 22 hours a week and 27 weeks per year. Their main concern for the future was too much leisure!
The average American now works 4 more weeks per year than they did in 1979. The average iPhone user touches their phone 2,617 times everyday for a grand total of 2.5 hours per day. The average male plays 10,000 hours (that’s 3 hours a day for over 9 years!) of video games before the age of 21. Every year, the average American spends 705 hours on social media and 2,737 hours watching T.V.[1] Perhaps this is why, according to a recent study, a quarter of American adults have not read a single book (either in whole or part) in the past year.
This is not the good life. For thousands of years, wisdom beckons us to slow down and smell the roses. King Solomon, the wisest person in written history, recommends “enjoying life, because there is nothing better for a person under the sun than to eat and drink and be glad.”[2] He advises that it is useless to anxiously toil in our daily lives building houses, families and cities without rest because “God grants sleep to his beloved.”[3]
In the same way, Jesus teaches that we are not to live anxiously.[4] Instead, he emphasizes the importance of humans finding “rest for their souls.”[5] In one instance, Jesus’ disciples were so busy, they did not even have time to eat. Seeing their tireless efforts, Jesus commanded that they “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.”[6]
The good life is savoring the present moment with peace of mind and a joy-filled heart. How? We must intentionally slow down and “come away to a quiet place.” Here, we find rest for our body, soul and mind.
Break up your routine. Or better yet, make a new routine to slow down, come away, and rest.
Whether you are bringing a group out for a celebration, a special someone for a romantic getaway or getting some much-needed alone time, we hope that you will leave rested and full of joy and peace.
